He was arrested by the Madhya Pradesh Police on 2 January 2021 in the middle of his comic act. He was booked under Section 295-A, Section 298, Section 269, Section 188, and Section 34 of the Indian Penal Code.

After being in jail for a month, he was released under the direction of the Supreme Court. After his release, he continued to do shows in different cities, but he started receiving many threatening messages and calls, due to which Munawar had to cancel more than 16 shows in a row.
