The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that heavy rain will persist in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra for the next three days, until July 10.
Heavy rainfall across Mumbai has led to waterlogging in several areas, causing significant traffic jams and disrupting local train services between Khadavli and Titwala in the Kalyan-Kasara section on Sunday. The city experienced substantial overnight showers.
According to the IMD, moderate to heavy rainfall will continue to affect Mumbai throughout Monday, July 8, with the possibility of thunderstorms at night.
On Sunday, local train services between Kasara and Titwala were halted after a tree fell on the tracks due to thunderstorms and rain. Additionally, soil covered tracks between Atgaon and Thansit stations, and another tree fell on the tracks blocking the Vashind station, further disrupting train services. It is anticipated that train operations will resume on these routes from Monday.
Heavy rains in Maharashtra have impacted the Central Railway suburban services, with waterlogging on stations and tracks on Monday morning. The CRPO stated, “Train services are affected at Sion and between Bhandup and Nahur stations. Rainwater was above the tracks, causing trains to stop for nearly an hour. The water has now receded slightly, allowing trains to restart, but services remain affected.”
The local weather department reported continued heavy rain in Mumbai’s Dindoshi early Monday, leading to waterlogging in many areas.

The IMD has also predicted further heavy rain in Maharashtra over the next three to four days. Heavy rains are likely to affect the Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada regions from July 8 to July 10, 2024.
As the rain continued, Mumbai residents shared images of waterlogged streets and dark thunderstorms in both North and South Mumbai.
“50mm rain in 1 hour + unusual thunder lightning in South Mumbai. Waterlogging is imminent in low lying areas, luckily it happened post midnight,” one user wrote on X.

Twitter users noted that it is highly unusual for lightning and thunderstorms to occur in Mumbai during the peak monsoon season, especially in July.
Thane is one of the worst-hit areas, experiencing continuous heavy rain since Saturday. Houses and bridges in the Shahpur area have been submerged due to the downpour, prompting the NDRF to conduct rescue operations for those trapped in the flooded localities.
