Patna: The opening day of Bihar’s Monsoon Session witnessed sharp political exchanges as opposition parties used the Assembly premises to protest against a series of examination paper leaks, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the controversy surrounding national recruitment and entrance examinations.
Members of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the CPI(ML) Liberation gathered outside the legislature carrying placards and raising slogans, accusing the Centre of failing to protect the integrity of competitive examinations. The protest focused particularly on allegations surrounding the NEET examination, which has remained a major political issue over the past several months.
The five-day Monsoon Session of the Bihar Legislature began on Monday and is scheduled to continue until July 24.
Proceedings in both Houses began with members paying tribute to former legislators who passed away since the previous session. After the customary obituary references, the House was adjourned for the day and will reconvene on Tuesday morning.
The opposition maintained that repeated incidents of question paper leaks have undermined public confidence in India’s examination system, affecting lakhs of students preparing for competitive tests. Party leaders argued that accountability should extend to the highest levels of the education administration and reiterated their demand for the Union Education Minister to step down.
During the demonstration, opposition legislators criticised what they described as the government’s inability to prevent recurring irregularities in major examinations. They claimed that repeated controversies have created uncertainty among students and their families while raising concerns about the credibility of recruitment and admission processes.
The Monsoon Session is expected to remain politically significant, with both the ruling alliance and the opposition preparing to debate several administrative and financial matters.
Among the government’s key legislative priorities is the presentation of the first supplementary Budget for the 2026–27 financial year, valued at approximately ₹87,383 crore. The government is also expected to introduce a number of important Bills during the session, alongside discussions on development programmes and state finances.
Political observers expect education, employment opportunities, law and order, and public welfare to feature prominently in debates over the coming days as opposition parties continue to press the government on issues affecting young people across the state.
The protests on the opening day highlighted the continuing political impact of examination-related controversies, with opposition leaders indicating that they intend to raise the issue repeatedly throughout the session.
As legislative business resumes, the Bihar Assembly is likely to witness further debate on governance, education reforms and fiscal priorities, setting the stage for an eventful Monsoon Session in the state.
